Just how old should your baby boy be before he has a say in the style of clothes that he wears? While it is fun for a parent to play dress up with a baby boy, is it as fun for the child as it is for the parent? With child psychologists now all in virtual agreement that children begin developing personalities at a much younger age then previously thought, can the clothes that a child as young as two wears, play a determinate factor in the development of their personality?

Baby Boy Clothes – Hot Stuff

The parallel between the changes in society’s attitude towards childhood and the development of different styles of baby clothes is at first startling but then quite understandable.

Clothing for children then was simply a smaller version of adult clothes.

By the time they advanced to toddler age both boys and girls were clothed in copies of Mom’s dress. Romper suits meant that for the first time baby boys could be distinguished from baby girls. Preschool boys are believed to have used the suits for play. To begin with, long stockings were worn with knee-length romper suits.

Toddlers wore boots and the suits had long sleeves. Smocking became a feature on baby rompers from the 1920s and they were also far more colorful than baby clothes had been in the past.

Romper suits are still around today although not as popular for baby boys. It seems that in some ways baby boy clothes and kid’s clothes have gone back to older days in that many are now just smaller versions of adult clothes (jeans, polo shirts, camouflage pants), albeit much more colorful.
